GARDENS

Knaresborough Terraced Garden

This site posed several challenges – a steep slope away from the rear of the house meant there was very limited usable level space for people.

The site is narrowest near the house, before opening out by almost threefold, with the steep climb continuing with the uppermost part of the garden level with the eaves of the house below.

Pushing the level change away from the house through a series of excavated terraces created the much needed useable space, through which Matthew created a visual link in a form of a formal pool and a pair of rills that flow down the terracing.

Above the terraced area the garden widens to a kitchen garden, from which a link planting creates a visual connection to a summerhouse overlooking a wildlife pond.
